Merano, the historic spa town
22 km distance, 24 minutes by train
Merano is nestled in a valley basin surrounded by mountains. Here is where Val Passiria, Val Venosta and Val d’Adige meet. Merano has been known as a health resort since the 19th century. The city is considered one of the first tourist magnets of the Habsburg Empire, with many notable guests from the political and cultural spheres of the time. The city’s mild, almost Mediterranean climate and pure air were considered curative for lung ailments.
Today, Merano is a small city of contrasts, with high mountains of the Gruppo del Tessa (up to 3,337 m), palm trees in many gardens and along the promenades, historical buildings and contemporary architecture.
